People with one kidney may need to avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for colds and congestion, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, as these can damage the kidneys or lead to acute kidney injury in certain circumstances.
Non-NSAIDs that may help with a cold and congestion

It’s important to check with your doctor before taking medication for a cold or congestion if you only have one kidney. Other factors, such as the presence of kidney disease, may affect which medications are safe for you.
Adults with one kidney can also use the following non-medicinal remedies to try and improve congestion and other symptoms of a cold:
- get plenty of rest
- drink water to stay hydrated
- gargle salt water
- drink warm lemon and honey water
- breathe in steam, such as in a bathroom with a hot shower running
- eat a balanced, nutritious diet
